From Renewable Energy Magazine we learn about a hybrid solar and geothermal project in Nevada that has been given the go ahead.

Enel Green Power has been granted regulatory approval to develop the first hybrid plant of this kind in the world – the combination of two renewable sources of energy to produce electricity.  The 47 MW Stillwater geothermal plant will be enhanced through the construction of a 24-MW solar installation, which will boost the geothermal plant’s overall output.

Nevada’s goal is to generate 20% of its electricity from renewables by 2015.

Enel Green Power is a subsidiary of the Enel Group — Italy’s largest power company and the second largest utility in Europe.

Elsewhere, several companies are working to combine biomass and solar energy in hybrid plants. Earlier this year for example, construction started on two solar-biomass operations in Spain.
