NACSONLINE writes about the most likely alternative transportation fuels in the US in 2025. “What is the future of retail fuels? Depending on whom you ask, the future could be in compressed natural gas (CNG), liquefied natural gas (LNG), hydrogen or electric…Each alternative fuel has its own advantages and disadvantages.” In contrast, ars technica thinks it will be continuing refinements to the internal combustion engine that will enable vehicles to reach the newly mandated fuel efficiency standard of 54,5 miles per gallon by 2025.

Honda confirms it will have a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle for 2015 we learn from autoevolution. The new vehicle will be offered in Europe, Japan and in the US. Meanwhile, Gas2 says GM is looking to have a fuel cell vehicle by 2016.

SLASH GEAR notes that Honda, Toyota, Nissan and Hyundai will be bringing hydrogen fuel cell vehicles to Nordic countries by 2017.  The auto makers are part of a larger agreement with infrastructure companies and non-governmental organizations in Norway, Iceland, Sweden, and Denmark to achieve this goal. It is unclear whether the auto companies will be selling vehicles to private individuals or focusing on fleet sales and rentals.

In the US courier United Parcel Services (UPS) has ordered 40 hydraulic hybrid vehicles (HHV) for its fleet. These vehicles can achieve up to 35% improved fuel economy and up to 30% CO2 emissions reduction over traditional diesel-powered vehicles. The HHVs operate on two power sources – a fuel-efficient diesel combustion engine and advanced series hydraulic hybrid. Energy created by the vehicle’s continued braking action is stored in the HHV’s hydraulic high-pressure accumulator, similar to what is done with electric motors and batteries in a hybrid electric vehicle. The HHV has a function to turn off the engine and drive the vehicle using the stored energy to propel the vehicle. Because the HHVs efficiency relies on constant braking, the vehicles are best suited for urban routes, which typically involve frequent stopping and starting.

autobloggreen informs us that European courier DHL has ordered 50 Renault utility vans for delivery by 2015. Renault’s Kangoo Z.E. has a single-charge range of about 100 miles while the Zoe’s range is about 130 miles on a full charge.

A new study from Pike Research projects more than 75,000 electric drive buses will be on the world’s roads by 2018. As reported by Renewable Energy Magazine no other category of heavy duty vehicles has seen more adoption of electric drive-trains than buses. In North America, hybrid models have captured as much as 40% of new bus purchases in recent years. Over the next five years the largest sales volumes will come in Asia Pacific while Latin America and Eastern Europe will also exhibit strong growth.
