Synthetic Genomics and ExxonMobil announced the development of a modified algae strain that could push algae-based energy closer to being a commercially viable alternative energy source.

Bloomberg New Energy Finance projects that over the next two decades, the cost of solar power will still drop another two-thirds, onshore wind costs will be cut nearly in half, and offshore wind costs will drop 71%. The analysis suggests by 2023, solar and onshore wind will be competitive with new US gas plants. By 2028, solar will beat existing gas generation.

At the the US Conference of Mayors this week, some 250 mayors of cities and towns unanimously backed an ambitious commitment for US cities to run entirely on renewable energy by 2035. However, the commitment did not include any specifics as to how this goal would be achieved.

Oilprice says more than $2 trillion of planned investments in crude oil and natural gas projects by 2025 risk becoming redundant if governments around the world stay committed to targets to lower carbon dioxide emissions to limit global warming to 2 degrees C.

In the latest E-Mobility Index report (2Q/2017), consultancy Roland Berger says that China will dominate both the electric car market and the industry in the foreseeable future. In 2016, China more than doubled sales of plug-in hybrids and battery-electric vehicles to more than 350,000 units. Chinese auto manufacturers are expected to produce some 3.5 million electric vehicles throughout the period 2015-2019.

Germany saw about 28,000 new plug-in hybrids and pure electric vehicles purchased in 2016—accounting for no more than 0.8% of the total passenger car market sales in that country.

Dr. Peter Martens, head of research and development for German car maker Audi, told Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport that the battery cost for its new 2018 all electric e-tron quattro may cost as little as €100 per kilowatt-hour. (US$ 112) At that price, the 95 kWh battery should cost Audi about $10,000 per vehicle.

Brittany Ferries has confirmed the construction of a new liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered cruise ferry to travel in UK waters starting in 2019. Powered by LNG, the ship’s four main engines will feed electric generators and two electric shaft propulsion motors with two fixed pitch efficient propellers.

Bonett Gas Investment, the Czech Republic’s largest vendor of compressed natural gas (CNG) for transportation, will have more than 40 CNG refueling stations in the country by the end of this year. The stations have a high compression capacity and are equipped to fill a vehicle in 2 to 3 minutes.
